PropertyShark: A Reminder of Another Data Tool for Today’s Commercial Vendors and industry partners

While recently searching for RE industry-related information, I was reminded of PropertyShark — a platform many real estate professionals have used over the years. For those who may not be familiar (or who have not looked at it in some time), it remains one of several data tools available in the commercial real estate space.
PropertyShark was founded in 2003 by Matthew Haines and Ryan Slack and is headquartered in New York City. It originally gained traction by addressing a persistent industry challenge: fragmented and difficult-to-access public property records. The platform launched with deep coverage in the New York City market and became known for consolidating ownership data and property intelligence into a single searchable interface. After its acquisition by Yardi Systems in 2010, the platform expanded its national reach and integrations.
I first encountered PropertyShark while in college pursuing my degree in Real Estate Development, when the platform was still heavily NYC-focused. At the time, it was a useful research resource for understanding ownership and property profiles — and it continues to serve that general function today.
Where It Fits for Vendors? For vendors in the commercial and retail environment — including roofing, landscaping, paving, security, and HVAC firms — platforms like PropertyShark are best viewed as intelligence and prospecting resources rather than marketing channels. Their practical value typically centers on helping users:
Identify ownership entities Locate mailing information View related property portfolios Review basic property characteristics
This type of visibility can support more targeted outreach and account-based prospecting, particularly when trying to reach actual ownership groups rather than front-line site contacts.
A Practical Reminder The commercial real estate landscape continues to evolve, and most professionals rely on multiple data sources to build pipelines and support decision-making. PropertyShark is simply one of the tools in the broader ecosystem that some industry participants may find useful depending on their market, asset type, and workflow.
As always, the effectiveness of any platform depends on how it is integrated into a disciplined prospecting and relationship strategy.
